Carbondale Middle School is a public middle school serving roughly 365 5th-8th grade students. Nestled in downtown Carbondale at the base of Mount Sopris, CMS has a long standing tradition of excellence. Winner of the Colorado Succeeds prize, CMS has maintained a strong academic excellence, low teacher turnover, and a positive student culture that is cultivated through teachers’ attention to individual students and their collective commitment to common routines and expectations.
CMS’s programming includes core academic content delivered through rigorous curricula including Illustrative Mathematics and EL English Language Arts. Our English as a Second Language program is taught by award winning educators, and our social studies and science programming is anchored in evidence-based thinking. Essentials classes include STEM, physical education, and art, with opt-in band and Spanish language opportunities. Our social emotional program is delivered through Crew, an advising structure that provides every student a time to connect with a teacher.
CMS is committed to safety, student belonging, and joyful learning, delivered through tight instruction and common student expectations and routines that create an environment of predictability and consistency. We make CMS a joyful place for students and teachers by celebrating the uniqueness of every student. Fun is built into our programming through Crew, experiential education trips, and Color Games, a year-long friendly competition fostering teamwork and character education.
Most importantly, at CMS, our mission is simple: Increase academic, social, and emotional growth of all students. To see direct evidence of our commitment to student growth and excellence, see our TLCC survey results, which is an anonymous statewide survey of licensed, school-based educators to assess teaching conditions at the school, district and state level.

We want to help launch CMS's 8th grade class into their next chapter with a Graduation Celebration! The 8th grade year is a special milestone, marking the end of middle school and the beginning of a new adventure in high school. Our goal is to create a memorable event that honors the hard work, friendships, and community spirit that have brought these students to this point in their educational journey.
We are raising funds to cover the costs of the celebration, including program printing, decorations, and a DJ for the dance. Every contribution will help make this event truly special for the students. Any excess funds raised will follow the 8th grade class with them to Roaring Fork High School, supporting their continued success as they move forward.
Your support means so much to our students and our families. Help us celebrate the 8th graders, Class of 2030, and give them a send-off they will always remember! Thank you for being part of our community and for helping us make this milestone unforgettable.

We are so pleased to announce that Cora Carballeira has been named the Principal of Carbondale Middle School beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. Ms. Carballeira has been a member of the Roaring Fork High School leadership team since 2021, serving as both an Assistant Principal and the Dean of Culture. She was also a teacher at Carbondale Middle School from 2002-2021. We are thrilled to be a part of the great things that are in store for CMS with Cora’s reflective, student-focused leadership.
Ms. Carballeira was selected using our established hiring process for school leaders. The interview committee, composed of certified and classified staff, parents, and district leadership, as well as a separate student panel of CMS students, noted that Ms. Carballiera is a reflective, results-oriented leader with a track record of success who focuses on building relationships and maintaining high academic expectations.
We are grateful for all of your support in this process and for those of you who served on the hiring committee.
Thank you,
Anna Cole, RFSD Superintendent
Stacey Park, RFSD Assistant Superintendent
Joel Hathaway, RFSD Executive Director of Schools
