### Carbondale Middle School is a public middle school serving roughly 365 5th-8th grade students.  Nestled in downtown Carbondale at the base of Mount Sopris, CMS has a long standing tradition of excellence.  Winner of the Colorado Succeeds prize, CMS has maintained a strong academic excellence, low teacher turnover, and a positive student culture that is cultivated through teachers’ attention to individual students and their collective commitment to common routines and expectations.

### CMS’s programming includes core academic content delivered through rigorous curricula including Illustrative Mathematics and EL English Language Arts.  Our English as a Second Language program is taught by award winning educators, and our social studies and science programming is anchored in evidence-based thinking.  Essentials classes include STEM, physical education, and art, with opt-in band and Spanish language opportunities.  Our social emotional program is delivered through Crew, an advising structure that provides every student a time to connect with a teacher.

As our community turns toward the holiday season and the New Year, columns like this typically reflect on the year that is ending and the new year to come. While I would prefer to share news from the students, families, teachers and staff who make our district so strong, instead I would like to share information about financial challenges facing the district. 

At its December meeting, the Board of Education learned about several financial issues that will impact the district’s budgets this year and next. The first issue to address is closing out the district’s estimated $5.7 million shortfall, due primarily to underestimating the true cost and risk of the self-insurance plan launched in the 23/24 school year. The shortfall was further complicated by the rushed development of the 24/25 school year budget that omitted key expenditures and overestimated student enrollment. A huge shout out to all families and businesses that contributed to our "Every Kid Gets a Yearbook" fund.  Thank you so much for all who donated, all who came to movie night, all who participated in Penny Wars, all who contributed to the 50/50 raffle, and on and on.  Your big and small donations made this happen.  Yearbooks will be out in May and we are so excited that everyone gets to have one this year.  Congratulations CMS!

Color Games Play by Play

The Basalt Middle School Wrestling (which includes our CMS wrestlers) won the PEG League (Pitkin, Eagle, Garfield Counties) wrestling championship! The team includes both male and female wrestlers in 7th/8th grade from 6 area middle schools: Aspen Middle, Aspen Community, Basalt MIddle, Carbondale Middle, Carbondale Community, Cornerstone, and home-schooled students. It was the 6th time BMS has won the tournament in the past 17 years.\
The team is coached by Keegan Gilligan, Eric Hunsberger, and Ryan Bradley

Aspen Skiing Co is hosting our third annual [Girls on Patrol Day](https://www.aspensnowmass.com/visit/events/girls-on-patrol) on Saturday, March 15th, at Snowmass. This event is all about getting hands-on experience with patrolling skills, including running toboggans, patching up injuries, treasure hunting with beacons, uphaul rescue, and much more\
This is geared for middle and high school girls (ages 11-18) who can confidently ski a blue run. It will run from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Lunch and swag will be provided. It’s free to join and we can comp tickets and rentals for kids, as needed.\
