8th Grade Team - Social Studies Teacher
Matthew Phelan comes to CMS from Camarillo, California where for the last 3 years he taught Health Policy, U.S. History and Entrepreneurship. He has also taught Algebra. Before entering education, Matthew worked as a Venture Capital/Private Equity lawyer for several firms in New York, Boston and San Francisco. He has a passion for education and a desire to help students acquire the skills they will need to succeed at the highest level of college and career. Matthew is also active in athletics, having coached football at Rio Mesa and Camarillo High Schools in California. He spends much of his free time with his family and looking into exercise physiology and reading up on the latest trends in social studies research. Matthew has degrees from U.C.L.A. (B.A., B.A.), Boston University (J.D.) and U.S.C. (M.S.) and was an All-Pac-10 selection and CBS Sportline Player of the Year in 1999 as a football player at U.C.L.A. As a lawyer, he was voted a “Rising Star” by the Massachusetts Bar Association Corporate Law Division and is the author of several articles on the finer points of private equity legal practice.
